Japanese War Bride, 1952

Don Taylor, Shirley Yamaguchi, Cameron Mitchell and Marie Windsor; directed by King Vidor; 20th Century Fox; domestic drama about an officer wounded in Korea who marries his Japanese nurse and takes her home to California; scenes filmed on the Monterey Peninsula, including Point Lobos, and in Salinas, including the first-ever filming of a movie from a helicopter.

Johnny Belinda, 1948

Jane Wyman and Lew Ayres; directed by Jean Negulesco; Warner; from a play by Elmer Harris; memorable performance by Miss Wyman, who won an Oscar for Best Actress playing a deaf mute in a sensitive story about life in the silent world; Oscar nominee for Best Picture, screenplay, direction, cinematography, musical score and art direction; scenes filmed along the Pebble Beach-Pacific Grove waterfront.

Jonathan Livingston Seagull, 1973

Directed by Hall Bartlett; Paramount; fantasy about a seagull who aims to fly faster than his peers and arrives at a perfect world; filmed in and around the Monterey Regional Waste Management District's Marina landfill (what used to be called a dump); the district was formerly known as the Monterey Peninsula Garbage and Refuse Disposal District and its letterhead carries the slogan, "Home of Jonathan Livingston Seagull," because so much of the movie was filmed at the district's landfill; Oscar nominee for cinematography.

Julie, 1956

Doris Day, Louis Jourdan, Barry Sullivan and Frank Lovejoy; directed by Andrew Stone; MGM; suspense drama about a concert pianist who plans to murder his wife; Oscar nominee for screenplay and song (title song); scenes filmed at the Monterey Peninsula Airport, including a plane-landing scene, and elsewhere on the Peninsula, including Colton Hall; Monty Hellam, a former police judge, had a bit part and was in Colton Hall when "Julie" went to the "Carmel Police Station" to report an attempt on her life.

Junior, 1994

Arnold Schwarzenegger, Danny DeVito, Emma Thompson and Frank Langella; directed by Ivan Reitman; Universal; fantasy about male pregnancy; scenes filmed at Stonepine Resort in Carmel Valley and at Big Sur.
